With Thanksgiving family gatherings over and done, it's looking to be a busy Black Friday not just for shoppers, but for local bars.
"It's karaoke night," said Molly Bowman, a bartender at the Ruston Inn in Tacoma.
But the party brewing inside sometimes comes with a price outside at the end of the night.
"A lot of people refuse to take a cab home," said Bowman. "They want their car to leave the bar because they're scared if they leave the car, their car is going to get towed."
But in Pierce County, at least through New Year's, towing might be the preferred option.
"Nobody has an excuse to have a DUI during the holidays," Bowman said. "You're actually getting a free ride home."
That's right - free.
More than a dozen tow companies in Fife, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Puyallup, Spanaway, Tacoma, University Place and Fircrest, are volunteering their night crews to give heavy drinkers, and their cars, a lift home.
"We can carry as many passengers as we have seat belts," said Bill Sullivan, who owns Liberty Towing in University Place.
It's called Tow-to-Go, a program Sullivan said is in its 17th year, and it lasts from Black Friday through the new year. Sullivan said if a bartender calls one of the tow companies, drivers will come and chain up the driver's car, and, with the bar-goer in the passenger seat, drive them home.
But Sullivan added, "We don't pick them up at a bar and take them to another bar. We don't take them to house parties. We don't take reservations early in the evening to pick them up at 1 a.m."
