On November 3rd in Skagit County, an Anacortes police officer had to brake hard and swerve to avoid colliding with a vehicle that failed to stop for the stop sign on 20th Street at Commercial Avenue around 11:19 p.m. The officer stopped the vehicle. The driver, a 52-year-old Anacortes woman, smelled strongly of intoxicants. She handed the officer a credit card instead of her license, and fumbled through several documents looking for her registration before realizing it was in her hand. She failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on a charge of DUI. She provided breath samples about two and a half times the legal limit. She was cited and released to a sober friend.
Comment: Again, looks bad but every DUI looks bad. Question: Did the Anacortes police officer really had to brake hard to avoid a collision or did he have to brake hard to avoid nearly getting into a collision? Seems silly to nit-pick, but there is a very big difference between the twol Also, NHTSA does not use language such as "fail" a field sobriety test, so why do officers?
