Skagit County DUI Attorney: Foreign Substances DO elevate your BAC reading

In recent blogs I have commented on food or foreign substances that may affect your BAC reading.  Similarly, I have blogged on the issue of "mouth alcohol" and its affect on ignition interlock devices (which are installed in cars more frequently than ever before).  This office is currently in the process of testing different substances and trying to figure out exactly what will affect your IID.  One study is currently being conducted in Snohomish County and the other will be conducted in Skagit County.
The products tested include Listerine Pocket Paks, Icebreakers Frost Mints, Altoids, Albuterol Asthma Spray (one of many) and Listerine Mouth Wash.  If one of these substances registered a BAC reading then the BAC readings were continued for 5 minutes after the substances was first put in the mouth.  The mints remained in the mouth while the Albuterol spray was concluded and the mouthwash was spat out.  The results:

Listerine Pocket Paks:             BAC:  0.00

Icebreakers Frost Mints:         BAC:  0.00

Altoids:                                   BAC:  0.00

Albuterol Asthma Spray:        BAC:  0.00

Listerine Mouth Wash:           BAC:  0.304; BAC:  0.302 (2 mins after); BAC:  0.083 (5 mins later)

More results for different substances in future blogs.  Clearly the danger of mouthwash and breath testing is painfully obvious.
