Whatcom County DUI News: Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney running for election again

Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney David McEachran announced that he’d like to keep the office he’s held since 1975.  Yep, he’s running again!  Here’s his official press release:

Dave McEachran announced today that he will be seeking reelection to the position of Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney. Dave McEachran was first elected to the office of Prosecuting Attorney in 1975, after having served as a deputy prosecutor for two and one half years, and is now completing his ninth term in office. He is the longest serving elected prosecutor in the State of Washington.

McEachran has indicated that this has been a very challenging position over all of these years. “Our geographic position on I-5 and our border with Canada has dramatically increased the pressure on law enforcement in Whatcom County. I-5 is a major thoroughfare from the Mexican Border to Canada. We see
many people with criminal backgrounds who are traveling to the international border to leave the country. Often they are denied entry into Canada and end up in Whatcom County. These people have caused a variety of crimes ranging from thefts to homicides. We also have a brisk trade in drug smuggling from Canada to the United States and from the United States to Canada. In addition, United States citizens who are arrested in Canada on warrants from various states are handed over to us for extradition to those states. Consequently, the International Border has presented many unique challenges to my office and law enforcement in this county.”

Pointing to his accomplishments during his tenure as Prosecuting Attorney. McEachran stated, “I feel that one of the major accomplishments in my past 36 years in office has been the development of a team approach that combines my office and all of the law enforcement agencies, local and federal in this county. With the loss of resources due to the economic downturn the team approach has become even more critical to us. We have a terrific working relationship with all of the law enforcement agencies in this county. That has enabled us to be more efficient and successful in dealing with criminal investigations and prosecutions. The end result of this working relationship has been a more effective criminal justice system and greater public safety.”

Another accomplishment pointed out by McEachran has been the experienced and professional staff that he has maintained over his years in office. “A number of the senior attorneys in the office have been here for over twenty five years, are very experienced and very efficient. This has lead to a greater capacity to deal with the workload that we face in this office and has contributed to the successes that we have achieved in both the criminal and civil sides of the office”, McEachran stated. In addition to the criminal responsibilities the prosecutor also serves as the legal representative to Whatcom County and its officials, and represents Whatcom County in any law suits.

McEachran indicated that the next four years will present many challenges. The felony caseload has remained relatively static, but the serious cases have increased dramatically. “We presently have eight homicide cases in the office in either the investigatory stage, or preparation for trial stage. This is certainly a large number of serious cases for our staff to deal with.” In addition, Whatcom County Government has faced budget shortfalls and has reduced staffing in most of the County offices. Dave McEachran said that he was looking forward to the challenges of four more years as the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney.

McEachran is presently serving as the chairman of the Forensic Investigations Council after having been appointed to this Council by Governor Gregoire. This Council oversees the State Toxicology Laboratory and the State Crime Laboratory system. McEachran has also served as the president of the Washington State Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, has been a member of the board of trustees of that organization, and also has been a lecturer for the National District Attorneys Association.
