A state trooper was dragged 40 feet into freeway traffic near Federal Way after a driver he had stopped suddenly took off and the trooper couldn't free himself from the driver's side door.

The trooper suffered only minor injuries and the driver later got stuck in dirt on a shoulder and was arrested on numerous charges.

State Patrol said the incident took place just before 4 p.m. Aug. 27 on northbound Interstate 5 near South 375th Street. The trooper was responding to a 911 call of a car that was being driven erratically.

The trooper pulled over a black Nissan 350Z, and noticed the driver acting suspiciously. The man refused to keep his hands visible and was seen leaning over the car's center console, State Trooper Julie Startup wrote in a press release.

As the trooper opened the driver's side door, the man started the car and drove off. The trooper was dragged about 40 feet into the right lane before he managed to let go.

After returning to his patrol car, the trooper saw the Nissan lose control on the 54th Avenue exit ramp and get stuck in dirt on the left shoulder.

The driver left the car and continued to resist arrest, Startup said. He gave a fake name and date of birth but was properly identified during booking into King County Jail.

The man, from Renton, had four outstanding warrants. He was booked for investigation of several charges: assault of a police officer, felony eluding, DUI, resisting arrest, providing false information and driving with a suspended license.

"The trooper was very fortunate to not be struck by traffic and only received minor scrapes," Startup wrote
