Seven Skagit County law enforcement agencies will deploy extra DUI patrols later this month as part of the annual nationwide "Drive Hammered, Get Nailed" campaign.

From Aug. 19 to Sept. 5, the additional officers will be on the lookout for drug and alcohol-influenced drivers as part of an effort to prevent DUI-related deaths, according to a statement from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

This will be the first such campaign that will include the enforcement of Washington's "Hailey's Law," which went into effect last month. The law requires all DUI arrestees' cars to be towed an impounded for at least 12 hours. Only a legal owner who was not in the car during the arrest may retrieve the car before the 12 hours are up.

During last year's "Drive Hammered, Get Nailed" campaign, officers arrested 60 people in Skagit County for DUI, according to the statement. Throughout all of 2010, 1,180 people were charged with DUI in the county.

The Anacortes, Burlington, Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley and Swinomish Tribal Police departments, the Skagit County Sheriff's Office and the State Patrol will join about 10,000 other agencies in the United States in this special enforcement.
