Everett Lynnwood Snohomish County DUI Attorney: Area police planning more St. Patrick's Day patrols

OLYMPIA -- If you want to keep the luck o' the Irish on your side for St. Patrick's Day, law enforcement officials are saying "Don't drive drunk."
Extra officers will be patrolling Tri-City streets beginning today, looking for impaired drivers.
The emphasis patrols will run through March 20 -- meaning officers will be on the lookout for those celebrating St. Patrick's Day the weekend before and the weekend after.
Last year, 46 DUI arrests were made in the Tri-Cities during the same time period, officials said.
"Drunk or drugged driving remains the leading cause of death in traffic crashes," said Lowell Porter, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. "These preventable crashes can be eliminated if everyone works to become a part of the solution."
In Washington, impaired drivers still are the most frequent factor contributing to traffic deaths, officials said.
In 2009, 491 people were killed on Washington's roads and impaired drivers accounted for 53.8 percent of those deaths.
Night-time driving -- between the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. -- also is a big factor, with more than two-thirds of fatal crashes then being DUI-related.
Agencies participating in the St. Patrick's Day patrols are the Kennewick, Pasco and Richland police departments, Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Washington State Patrol.
