A 24-year-old Anacortes man faces a charge of fraud after police were called to a motel in the 3400 block of Commercial Avenue around 10:47 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19.
Hotel staff became suspicious when the man's father called to give them a credit card number to pay for his motel room. The staff checked with the bank and were told the card did not belong to the father. Officers learned the card belonged to an Anacortes woman who befriended the suspect and allowed him into her home days earlier.
The man reportedly copied her credit card number and used it to pay for his room and send flowers to his ex-girlfriend. He fled the hotel room on officers' arrival. He was arrested in Anacortes two days later.
Among the other 182 cases handled by Anacortes police during the previous week:
Saturday, Feb. 19
• Police called to a fight between two young women outside an apartment complex in the 800 block of 30th Street around 12:39 a.m. contacted six people inside an apartment. A 16-year-old girl was unresponsive and aid was called. It appeared the girl might have alcohol poisoning because of the large quantities of empty liquor containers in the apartment. Two other girls ages 18 and 17 were arrested on charges of underage drinking. A 27-year-old man who lives in the apartment appeared to have provided the liquor to the girls. He was arrested on a charge of furnishing alcohol to minors. The girls denied involvement in an altercation.
• A 52-year-old Seattle man was arrested on a charge of DUI after being stopped for speeding in the 1000 block of Commercial Avenue around 11:53 p.m. The officer smelled alcohol on the man and asked him to perform field sobriety tests. The man did so with some difficulty. The man told officers he had been drinking at a downtown establishment and was heading home. He was taken to the police department for a breath alcohol test and was released to a sober adult.
Sunday, Feb. 20
• A 22-year-old Anacortes man was cited for negligent driving and hit and run after he left he scene of a collision around 12:28 a.m. Officers responded to the eastbound lanes of Highway 20 just past Fidalgo Bay Road, where they found the abandoned vehicle facing westbound, partially in the lane of travel. It appeared the driver lost control and hit the center barrier. Officers found open bottles of beer in the vehicle. Officers found the driver Sunday morning when he returned an officer's phone call. The man reportedly admitted he had been drinking and was speeding at the time of the crash.
• An Oak Harbor woman reported she and six others got turned around while hiking in the area of Little Cranberry Lake around 7:15 p.m. An officer walked in, found the party and walked them back to their car.
Monday, Feb. 21
• An 18-year-old Anacortes woman reported she was assaulted by her boss at a restaurant where she works in the 700 block of Commercial Avenue. She told officers her boss poked her in the shoulder after she made a mistake on an order. Officers contacted the restaurant owner who reportedly gave a similar account of the incident.
• A woman reported she was downtown shopping and left her husband in the car. When she returned the man and the car were missing. Officers checked the couple's residence and found the elderly man at home. Officers gave the woman a ride home.
• A 51-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested on a charge of domestic violence assault after a neighbor reported that she hit her 74-year-old mother over the head with a cordless phone. Officers reported the younger woman appeared intoxicated.
The next day, the same 51-year-old woman was arrested again for violating a no contact order after she returned to her mother's home after being released from jail.
Tuesday, Feb. 22
• A resident in the 500 block of Fourth Street reported his unlocked truck was prowled on Feb. 12. Among the items taken were a GPS, DVD player, binoculars, chain saw, digital camera and a camcorder. The victim suspected a family member who was in the truck on Feb. 11 may have taken them. Officers believe they found some of the items in a secondhand store in Mount Vernon.
Wednesday, Feb. 23
• Officers responded to six collisions on Wednesday morning during the snowstorm. Five were on Highway 20 between Reservation Road and Sharpes Corner. One collision at 12th Street and M Avenue was also reported.
• Officers were called to 27th Court following a complaint from a resident about neighbors arguing loudly. Officers could hear a man yelling at a woman inside an apartment when they arrived. The occupants of the apartment were reluctant to allow officers inside and eventually two women and a man emerged. They denied any physical assault but the man, who appeared intoxicated, was uncooperative, yelled expletives, would not identify himself and eventually ran from officers. He was arrested and faces charges of obstruction and disorderly conduct.
• A resident in the 4000 block of West Third Street reported an unlocked vehicle was entered overnight and a digital camera was taken.
Thursday, Feb. 24
• A 16-year-old Anacortes girl was arrested on charges of trespassing, resisting arrest and malicious mischief after officers responded to a call from Anacortes High School around 2:18 p.m. The girl and her 19-year-old boyfriend were previously trespassed from the high school grounds and warned that if they returned they would be subject to arrest.
After a staff member saw the two on campus, the police were called and contacted them across the street from the high school. The man was cooperative but the girl began to scream obscenities and would not answer the officer's questions. When she was told she was under arrest on a charge of trespassing she tried to walk away. She was restrained and placed in the back seat of the patrol car, where she began to kick at the door. She was taken to the police station where she continued her tirade and damaged a holding room. She was booked into Skagit County Juvenile Detention.
Friday, Feb. 25
• A dog owner in the Highland and Bryce Drive area did not endear himself to his neighbors after he was confronted about his small dog defecating in their yards while on walks. When the neighbor confronted the dog owner, he reportedly responded, "What are you the dog police?"
Since it was an ongoing issue, the homeowner called police who in turn contacted the dog owner. The man denied his dog was the offender. He was warned future complaints could result in citation.
