Troopers cracking down on too-tired truckers

SEATTLE -- In the wake of a string of accidents involving tractor trailers around the Puget Sound area, state troopers are now cracking down on tired truckers.

The move is part of a safety initiative to catch truckers who fake their log books, then hit the interstates while too tired to drive.

One trucker dozed off at the wheel and smashed through a construction zone along Interstate 5 last month, troopers said. The driver had allegedly entered false entries into his log book to look like he'd gotten the required hours of sleep when, in fact, he hadn't.

Helping catch these fatigued truckers is a state-of-the-art computer system. Using sensors and cameras planted along the interstate, the technology gives troopers every little detail about a truck approaching the scales. Just one red flag, like a history of violations or questionable registration, will lead troopers to the log book.

Troopers say one driver flagged on Wednesday had faked his log so severely that it claimed he'd been in Idaho Wednesday morning-when he was actually hundreds of miles away. Troopers ordered the man to park and sleep.
