NEAR MALTBY, Wash. -- A wrong-way driver triggered a five-car crash on State Route 524 in South Snohomish County on Wednesday.

Trooper Keith Leary said a pickup truck headed east in the westbound lanes hit an oncoming car at Little Bear Creek Road around 6:20 p.m.

Two cars behind the hit car could not stop in time and also crashed, the trooper said.

The wrong-way driver was taken into custody for investigation of drunk driving, and could face charges of vehicular assault.

Traffic was detoured in both directions in the hours after the crash. The roadway was reopen by 9:20 p.m.
