Skagit County DUI Attorney: Washington State Patrol Holiday DUI Emphasis Media Release

The Washington State Patrol in Vancouver has begun its holiday campaign against intoxicated drivers. The team consisting of three extra troopers and a supervisor are assigned to concentrate their efforts during high target times. These personnel are in addition to the number of troopers normally working the nighttime hours. The concept has proven to be highly successful in holiday seasons past.

Since October 13, the DUI Team in Vancouver has arrested 73 intoxicated drivers in 53 individual shifts worked. The team thus far has contacted 479 violators for various traffic and other violations. For the number of contacts made, the team has arrested one DUI for every 6.6 violators they have contacted. Additionally, the team has seized three pistols from motorists who were under the influence and in possession of the firearms, a violation in this state.

On Friday November 19, troopers located a motorist who had travelled the wrong direction on State Route 14, going eastbound in the westbound lanes. The driver had travelled from Interstate 5 to the interchange of Interstate 205, nearly 6 miles, travelling the wrong direction. Fortunately, the vehicle experienced power failure and the vehicle stopped. The driver was located stopped facing the wrong way in the inside lane.  The female driver was arrested for DUI with a breath alcohol level of .201. This was nearly 2 and ½ times legally intoxicated. The driver reported that she thought said she was destined for State Route 500 to arrive at her home in Camas. SR 500 is about 5 miles away from where she thought she was.

Drivers are cautioned to travel in the right lane when they have the opportunity both day and night. There is likely a higher frequency of intoxicated drivers on the roads in the nighttime hours and chances are any driver headed the wrong direction will be encountered in the inside or fast lane.

The DUI Team will be working in Clark County for the remainder of 2010. The Washington State Patrol would like to remind motorists, the best way to make the holidays safe and enjoyable is to always utilize a designated driver if you have been drinking alcohol.

Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, Island Counties -The Washington State Patrol reminds motorists who will be on the roads during the holiday period to plan their trips carefully by allowing ample time to reach their destination, obey the posted speed limit, not drink and drive, and ensure their vehicle is in proper working order and is equipped with the necessary emergency equipment.

"Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busier holiday periods of the year and that increases the traffic volume on our roads," WSP District 7 Captain Ken Ginnard said.  "With the volume also goes an increase in the chance for you to be involved in a collision.  That is why our troopers will be patrolling throughout the holiday period."

"Now through the end of the year is a period when we see a noticeable increase in the number of impaired drivers on our roads," Captain Ginnard said.  "Troopers will be keeping a sharp eye out for impaired drivers."

The Captain also cautions motorists to remain alert for impaired drivers on the state's high­ways.  Everyone can help reduce the number of alcohol-related collisions by reporting impaired drivers.  To report a suspected impaired driver, please call 911.

Last year, four people were killed in Snohomish County when they were hit by an impaired driver at the intersection of State Route 9 and 108th Street NE in Marysville at the end of the Thanksgiving weekend.

In addition to those already scheduled to work, the Patrol will have extra troopers scheduled to work during the holiday weekend to watch for impaired drivers.  The money for the extra troopers is from a Washington State Traffic safety Commission grant.

If you choose to drink alcohol, please use a designated driver or take a taxi.  This will ensure you will be able to celebrate the season at home with your family instead of your family having to spend the holidays picking you up at the jail, sitting beside you at the hospital, or preparing for a funeral.

Washington State DUI Attorney: Thanksgiving means increased DUI Emphasis Patrols

It's Thanksgiving which means the DUI Emphasis patrols are officially under way.  This means more officers are patrolling and these extra officers are looking specifically for DUI drivers.  Emphasis patrols will be conducted in King, Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap, Mason, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom Counties.  "Traffic crashes kill or seriously injure hundreds of people in King County each year, and driving impaired is a leading cause of these crashes," said Dr. David Fleming, Director and Health Officer for Public Health, Seattle & King County. "Treat everyone to a fun and safe Halloween by driving sober or planning a safe ride home."

Washington State DUI Attorney: DUI Emphasis patrols set for the holidays

Thanksgiving takes on a special meaning this year as the holiday Drive Hammered, Get Nailed campaign officially begins that day.  Between Nov. 25, 2010 and Jan. 2, local law enforcement will conduct extra DUI patrols throughout Kitsap County to rid the roads of impaired drivers during the holiday season.

"In Washington, impaired driving is still the most frequent contributing factor in deadly collisions. One life lost is one too many. Please do your part to be responsible, plan ahead and choose a safe ride home," said Marsha Masters, Kitsap County Traffic Safety Task Force, Target Zero Manager.

Lynnwood DUI Attorney: Lynnwood DUI Patrols cutting back

Budget cuts are affecting every governmental agency in these times of economic crisis.  The powerful and respected City of Lynnwood Police Department Traffic Division (DUI patrols) has also had to cut back.  In 2011/2012 the traffic division (DUI) is cutting back by the following: 

2010 –2 sergeants, I DUI officer, 8 motor officers

2011-2012 –Reduce by 2 officers and 1 sergeant Officer layoffs for all 3 positions plus 1 sergeant demotion.

Tough times indeed when the City of Lynnwood DUI Department is cutting back!

Lynnwood DUI Attorney: More DUI arrests in Lynnwood than any other City of comparable size in 2010

According to the City of Lynnwood, in the first seven months of 2010 the City of Lynnwood had more DUI arrests than any comparable City in Washington.  No surprise!  In Snohomish County the City of Lynnwood had 301 DUI arrests, the City of Everett had 144 DUI arrest s, Marysville had 112 DUI arrests, and Edmonds had only 91 DUI arrests.  No reason was given for the disparity but it is likely that it is due to the City of Lynnwood's DUI emphasis and well trained DUI law enforcement.  Other City's like Everett, Edmonds, Marysville, Mukilteo, Lake Steven's, Mountlake Terrace simply cannot compete with Lynnwood's police department for DUI patrols.  Here are the numbers:

Skagit County DUI Attorney: Anacortes DUI News

On November 17^th, a 59-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI after an officer pulled the vehicle she was driving in the 900 block of 13th St. over to warn her about a burnt out headlight.  That was nice of him!  The woman showed signs of intoxication and reportedly told the officer she had just left a downtown establishment.  She was given field sobriety tests and transported to the police station for a blood alcohol test.
