Most states in the U.S. now permit judges to order the installation of an IID as a condition of probation. There are also many states that mandate that an IID be installed for repeat offenders and in some states for first offenders. Forty-seven states and the District of Columbia have laws allowing the installation of alcohol ignition interlocks on the vehicles of offenders.
